So last night I was listening to talk radio on the way back from Sav On. Apparently there was a bit of local news that peaked my interest.
Northpark High School in Irvine is too small to host their own graduation ceremonies. The administration researched local facilites and got prices. They sent out letters to all parents of graduating seniors to see if there were any objections to hosting it at Saddleback Church (as has been done in previous years - each time with the letters going out.) The reason for choosing the "Baptist Mega-church in Lake Forest" was the indoor seating capacity, sound and video system, and cost. Not one letter was turned in. So they booked it.
Now a senior has come forward saying he takes issue with it being at a church and the school is scrambling. They've now cancelled it at Saddleback and are having it at the Bren Center at UC Irvine, which is WAY MORE EXPENSIVE. He argues a separation of church and state.
Then why is it churches are allowed to be voting places?
I can understand someone being uncomfortable graduating in a church, but first off - object in a timely manner, not in the beginning of June.
