Prop 8

Okay so I am obviously emotional about certain subjects, and Prop 8 is one of them. After dropping off some bags of clothes at Goodwill, I was sitting in an intersection behind a car with a "Yes on 8, reinstate marriage" bumper sticker. Standing on 2 of the corners were people holding "No on 8" signs. I got so excited I started honking my horn and giving them a thumbs up.

The driver of the car in front of me glared at me in his rearview mirror (he knew I was honking at them and not him) and I stuck my tongue out at him.

Then, when the light turned green, and me and another car continued honking our support, I started crying and the sheer seriousness of the situation. I may have resigned myself to who is going to be President, but I can't give up on this proposition.

Ok, I am confused on the wording. If you vote no, you are for allowing gays the right to be married, right? If you vote yes, you are voting to keep marriage between a man and a woman? For some reason, I always get this backwards. I really do hope that it goes through where gay marriages will still be recongnized. I wish more states would go for it too.

I think you've got it - same sex marriage is currently legal in CA. Proposal 8 would make it illegal.

Yes that is correct. Yes on 8 overturns the current status of gay marriage being legal. It is kind of confusing, but you have to think of it in terms of "should we overturn the current law or not?" This vote will have ramifications across the nation and I pray that it is voted down.

It just makes me mad because the yes on 8 people say to re-institute marriage. Um what? Nothing has changed for hetrosexual couples - marriage is still the same. And people assume that ALL religious people are in the yes on 8 crowd. Well I AM NOT!

I'd take your thought further and say that a "NO" will make the concept of my marriage better because it's not being perverted by bigots and small minded jerks.

Well if you look at my profile page you will see that I think opening marriage to more people may take the stigma out of the ball and chain train of thought that America seems to take such glee in. I would hope that by the time we have kids, they see marriage as a good thing, not a life sentence.

The sad part, in my opinion, is how that pro 8 people are totally avoiding the actual issue. They love the "if this passes, this MAY happen..." route.

And, oh damn, you know that schools may have to eventually recognize marriage as two people, not man and wife and that religions may eventually lose their tax exempt status.
I love the new one of the girl talking about the book King and King. We have it and the second where they adopt a girl. They are wonderful books.

"Separation of church and state"

If they must make marriage a thing that is state run and required for certain rights, then it should be available to anyone. If it's a strictly religious deal and has no repercussions any other way, then sure, make it man and woman. But don't lock people out of things because they can't get married.

I don't understand why people are so dumb about this. It's what this country was founded on.

Yup. Same as athiests can still get married - it isn't religious for them.

I get annoyed with the automatic demonation of those of faith on this issue. Not everyone wanting to vote yes on 8 is Christian / Catholic and not everyone voting no is agnostic / athiest. This isn't a vote on religion, it is a vote on marriage rights.

I agree. Make everyone go to the courthouse and get a civil union, which is where ALL the benefits come from.
Then let those who wish to be "married" do so in their church. Let the religion in question decide if they want to allow same sex marriage.
It will not be the first time that one religion will not acknowledge something another does.

That is exactly our philosophy. Marriage in worldly terms is a legal contract subject to laws. Marriage in the eyes of ALL GODS (not just mine) is something else and is personal to each couple.

And I really try and get people to understand, this isnt a religious issue. There are plenty of athiests who don't believe in gay marriage and there are those of us in the faith that do.
